To commemorate this last flight of ED840 a monument was unveiled at Saturday 6 April 1996, in Lier on the spot were the Lancaster crashed. On the initiative of Wim Govaerts and Mark Schroyens enough donations were found to pay for this memorial. In the morning of Saturday 6 April we went to the cemetery, were the 4 crewmembers are buried and held a small service, after then flowers were put down at their graves. In the afternoon at 15.00Hrs. we went to the memorial site were the local committee and the Mayor of Lier, Mrs. Marleen Vanderpoorten held their speeches.
The Mayor then unveiled the memorial, flowers were laid down by the Town Lier, Belgian Second World War Veterans, Bomber Command Association, 156 Squadron Association, The British Legion, and by the families of the Lancaster crew. The last post was blown and we held 1 minute's silence in honour of the crew.
