Behind a farm in the Eersteestraat 16 in Sint-Laureins is a memorial cross as a reminder of a Wellington crew (R1406) of the 40 Sqn, who had to pay for the storms of the night of June 27, 1941 with death. Due to the massive explosion and subsequent fire, three of the six airmen were not found. They have no known grave. The three others rest in Adegem. Actually, the cross is behind the farm, and one must first ask permission from the residents. The stone cross was paid for in 1950 by the family of the pilot Horrocks.
The crew included: P / O David W. Horrocks (pilot, missing), P / O Kenneth F. Glock (co-pilot), P / O Wallace G. Green (observer), Sgt Leslie C. Page (missing) , Sgt Jack S. Clover (missing), Sgt Tecwyn Morris (air gunner). The three missing are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial in England; the three other crew members are buried in the Adegem Canadian War Cemetery.
The farm is now holiday home De Vakantieschuur. Respect the privacy of the permanent or temporary residents when you visit this location.
